He did it! On October 14th, 2011 we declared Alden officially potty trained!! We started on Friday, October 7th and a week later....he did it!! I used the same method I did with Ella Rae since we had such a great experience – I highly recommend Toilet Training in Less Than a Day. It was originally written in 1974 and therefore offers some methods that by today’s standards may seem a bit harsh. I loved the method and it worked well for us. I liked the way it strongly encouraged independence and rewarded him for being dry and not just going pee-pee in the potty. So throughout the day we checked for dry big boy pants and would get a reward if his pants were dry! I kept a little diary and here’s what it looked like:
Day 1:
10:45 am: Big Boy Pants! (Daddy got him some really cool Toy Story ones - he loves them!) Pee Pee in potty = a yummy treat!
10:50: Checked for dry pants – they’re dry! = a yummy treat!
11:15: We decided to head outside to the backyard to play; I turned around and he had his pants off and was peeing in the grass! Yahoo! I’ll take it = a yummy treat!!
11:20: Check for dry pants - still dry - enjoying another yummy treat for being dry!
11:35: Treat for dry pants!
11:50: Treat for dry pants!
12:11: Pee Pee in potty before lunch = treat!
NAP
3:30: Tried to go pee pee – nothing. Put on big boy pants.
3:45: Checked for dry pants – still dry – yummy treat!
4:00: Checked for dry pants – still dry – yummy treat!
4:15: Checked for dry pants – still dry – yummy treat!
4:30: Checked for dry pants – still dry – yummy treat!
4:52: Pee Pee in potty = Treat!! Just drank a ton of water/juice!
5:52: 1st accident (Put his soiled pants in laundry basket himself and got new ones himself!) We kept them in a little basket next to his dresser so he can get them all by himself. And yes - I would have him walk all the way upstairs to do this bc the training took place downstairs (no carpet).
6:17pm: Pee Pee in potty! Put on “just in case pants” (pull up) when sleeping and explain that this is just in case some pee pee comes out but you still need to tell mommy when you need to go and we go to potty right when he wakes up!
Great Day 1!
Day 2:
7:00am: Put on big boy pants!
8:30: Accident - Poo Poo in big boy pants! Uh-oh!
8:45: Head to soccer field (potty in tow) to watch sissy play!
9:00-9:45: Asking him if he needs to go pee pee – he says NO! We try anyway – nothing!
9:45: Accident - Pee Pee in pants!
Weird early nap, but ok….
11:52: Put on big boy pants!
12:00: Pee Pee in Potty = Treat!
1:20: Pee Pee in Potty = Treat!
NAP
4:30 Big Boy Pants
4:40: Pee Pee in Potty = Treat!
5:30: Check for dry pants = Treat!
6pm: Pee Pee in Potty!
Great Day 2!
Days 3, 4 and 5: Great job! – only a few accidents, continued same routine.
Day 6: Great day – he began telling me when he needed to pee pee! Also started pulling down and BACK UP big boy pants all by yourself! We ventured to the store (potty in back of car) and carpool in big boy pants = no accidents! Yahoo!
Day 7: Sent him to school in big boy pants! Ms. Laura said he went every time they took him and was doing great until end of the day and he had an accident. After NAP no more accidents all day!
Day 8: NO accidents all day. Went to the dinner and Cumming Fair that evening (brought potty in car)! You went at the restaurant and twice at the fair! No accidents! It’s official – you got it!!
